A wiggly pink plunge pool hovering over the treetops for sea views and stargazing, Brancusi-inspired hand-carved ironwood columns and joglo sculpture, Balinese artisan-made ceramic tile, lush landscaping, kitchen daybeds, and an outdoor living room with ocean and volcano vistas... this one-of-a-kind boutique villa offers a unique experience. With architecture by Los Angeles' HAM Design Group, the bespoke two-bedroom retreat was completed in 2024 in Padang Padang, minutes from the surf and sand.

The space Kado Kubu translates to "gift house,” and it was designed to be a thoughtfully handcrafted gift of an escape away from our ordinary lives. The villa transports its guests to an environment full of unique textures, happy colors and playful shapes.

Enter the gallery-like foyer with hand-trawled fluted walls where a magnificent timber structure inspired by Javanese joglo houses directs your gaze upward to meet the exposed teak ceiling floating above. Lush tropical gardens complement the home’s blush pink exterior where 2 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms mirror one another, and a textured plunge pool in the sky is like a sculpture in its own right.

Custom built, finished entirely by hand and embracing a wabi sabi aesthetic, Kado Kubu is a celebration of artisanship and craftsmen. You’ll find no plain white walls inside, instead there are surfaces clad in terrazzo and striking 3D tiles from Bali’s Philip Lakeman Ceramic, and ceilings lined in oversized caning. The majority of furniture was designed by HAM Design Group and custom-made for the villa, including an onyx dining table with black and blush veins, and the giant L-shaped living room sofa.

Other pieces were sourced from galleries and homegrown brands across the island, with beautifully textured dinnerware and more from high-end local brand Kevala Ceramics. Original artwork throughout includes paintings by a Balinese artist and a vibrant ceiling mural commissioned by a Los Angeles–based artist, visible from the intimate shala equipped with yoga and Pilates equipment beneath the pool.

Cozy, quiet and supremely comfortable with expansive views, divine natural light, and a warm glow by night, this villa is hard to leave, even if it is only a couple minutes from the main road full of eateries, shops and wellness destinations.
